Default XL97 - Apply colour to Pivot tables

Hi.
This is the one thing that I never seem to get working in
the same way.
In Excel 97, I have been able to colour cells (or other
cell formattings) within a Pivot table, that remain after
refreshing.
There must be an algoritm to be followed precisely, but I
can't find the right sequence.
It has to do with the enable section button, etc.

Please, anybody ??

much appreciated,
Derek
