Default purchasing Excel

Hi folks. At work I am set up with windows xp and micro.
office 2000. The excel works great and I continue to
learn more and more.

I went to purchase excel for my home computer and the
salesman talked me into Microsoft works, which contained a
spreadsheet program "exactly the same" as Excel, but alot
cheaper. So I fell for it. Now I am realizing that I
can't protect cells, it only has one worksheet and isn't
capable of adding more sheets to a workbook, it can't
handle "complex" formulas, the list gets larger every time
I try to use it.

So now I need to buy the "real deal". I am finding there
are alot of choices. One is called "Microsoft office XP
standard for students and teachers". This is what they
have at Walmart. Is this the real program or is this
another "substitute"?
My computer at home uses windows 98. This software box
says that window 98 is OK. Thanks. Scott

Have you tried going to ebay and doing a search for excel?
For your home use xl97 (make sure it is xl 97 SR2) is good. But, for
compatibility get either xl2000 or office 2000 like you have at work.

It sounds like an Academic License

If you fit the eligibilty check then by all means get it

http://www.microsoft.com/office/edit...ouqualify.mspx

Other wise what you probably need is Office XP Standard. or Office 2000 if
you can find a used copy (try ebay)

See the Microsoft Web Site for the explanation of the various options
http://www.microsoft.com/office/edit...o/default.mspx

Note that Office 2003 specifies Windows XP or Windows 2000
so dont get that unless you plan on upgrading your OS

According to this Microsoft webpage:
http://www.microsoft.com/catalog/dis...1173&x=43&y=12
the academic version is the "full version". However, it
is legal only for teachers and students only.

I second Guillett's recommendation to try eBay. You won't
be able to get it as quickly, but you can save a lot of money,
especially if you get an older version.

A couple more distinctions:
1. Office Standard - lacks MS Access. Office Professional - includes MS
Access
2. Upgrade - must have older version of software on your computer,
else it won't install. Regular -- older version not req'd.
