Default Macro - square remains on screen

Weird question but I am sure that you know the answer.

When I run a macro, an image from another application or
my desktop, if nothing else is open, remains on my screen
when in excel. It is small, 1 inch, but it is anoying
and will not go away unless I shut down excel and
reopen. I am guessing that it is from screen updating
and I could turn that off but I was wondering if there is
another solution.

It is like there is a hole in my excel sheet and I can
see through to whatever is behind it. Anybody know what
I am talking about?

Yeah, what the hell is that? I thought it was just me. It doesn't
happen often, but it's always in the same place, just southeast of the
center of the screen. Screenupdating doesn't seem to help it to disappear.

Ditto problem. Thought it was a video card problem?
If the graph expert (Jon), doesn't know, I guess no one does.

Jon,

1. On excel 97, I can't remember it happening there either. But, at my age?
2. It seems to appear about the middle of the ws from right to left and
usually around the formula bar or below.
I have a Dell 820, nvidia video, P4, windows xp home, xl2002.
3. I have NOT been able to figure out why it appears and it will NOT go away
without exit and re-enter xl.

A bit of background may help. I don't recall ever seeing it in Excel
97, in a number of systems (Win95 and 92, 2000). I do see it on my
WinXP laptop running Excel 2000. What are you guys using, and where is
the blank patch?

Wow, the whole World seems to have the problem and everyone just thought
they were alone!

I'm another with Excel2K on WinXP (Thinkpad R32 Laptop, 1.7Ghz, 1Gb
RAM, 17Gb HDD with a 2Gb page file). It's usually when I've been
working on some very large files (although not too near the 70Mb
filesize that Excel bombs out at). I'd put it down to the system
grabbing back and then losing memory that had been taken by the
graphics card.
