Default Apparent Locked Cursor

In Excel 2000 - I cannot access any menu option or select any cell after
opening a spreadsheet - Cursor has a "New File" icon attached to it

If you click and drag a worksheet tab, you'll see an icon that looks like a
sheet of paper attached to the arrow cursor.

Maybe gently banging on the mouse or the control key (if that sheet of paper has
a + in it, it's a ctrl-click and drag) would help.
