Default Cannot Format areas of a workbook

I am suddenly unable to format ranges of cells on some sheets of a workbook.
The workbook is one I've been using for a long time. There's not anything
fancy to the formatting. The used part is only 7 worksheets (4 of which are
direct copies of sections of 1 worksheet). I have read other posts re the
4,000 format limit & tried the excel addin & the vba routine from Leo. I do
not receive error messages re the format limit. I can format cell ranges on
one sheet, but on 2 others I cannot. I can format these 2 sheets only if I
use the "Select all" box in the top left corner: then the format menu comes
up; otherwise it won't. The sheets are not protected. Any help would be
appreciated! Thanks.
