Default columns appear as numbers not letters

i have just opened a spreadsheet in excel, and rather than the columns
showing as A B C they are showing the same as rows, in numbers 1 2 3. This is
not normal and i can't write formulas.

go to Tools Options General tab under Settings uncheck R1C1
reference style.
