I want to be able to type a '+' or a '-' into a cell without initiating a
formula. Can the automatic formula be switched off for some columns?

Hi Lynn,

As far as I know, "automatic formula can't be switched off for some
columns" but you can get the same effect by formatting the column as
text, eg:
*[alt + o + e], Number - choose text or
*type a single appostrophe before the plus or minus. This forces the
cell to be formatted as text.

Thanks for the reply - your second idea may well work. But formatting the
cell as text I had already tried, excel still wants to make the cell a
formula!

Thank you, Brian - if only life was so simple. In Excel 2003 typing a plus
triggers off the formula wizard.
Best wishes

Hi Lynn,
thanks for the feedback, pleased we could help.

wrt to your response to Brian:
There must a setting somewhere in Excel 2003 that will allow you to
change this response b/c I have 2003 & I can press [+] or [-] and then
[enter] w/o the formula wizard (insert function dialog box) popping up.
I've had a bit of a search through the online help but can't find a
quick response - Goodluck if you go looking :-)
