Default Excel cannot connect to web

Hi All, trying to help a co-worker. He is taking a class. He downloaded
an Excel spreadsheet from the school website. Once downloaded, he opens
the spreadsheet, it is supposed to connect to the server so he can
complete his assignment. Excel will not allow him to connect although
he's already online (AOL Broadband). He can surf the web, download the
spreadsheet, Excel will not connect to the server. He has Win XP &
Office 2003.

I have the same(XP & Office 2003), I downloaded the spreadsheet, opened
it, and it worked just fine. It (Excel) made me log in and start the
assignment.

When he tries to connect to Microsoft Office online through the Excel
Help menu, it will not connect to the internet.

Any suggestions?
