Default In office 2003 how can FIXEDSYS font avail in EXCEL & not inWORD

See http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=291354 "Some fonts that
were available in Word 95 are no longer available in Word 2002".
The article also applies to Word 2003.

Word.
How can this be? Shouldn't Office provide a consistent environment?

I want to paste columnar text into Word and the proportional fonts screw it
all up.
The corporate desktop just switched to Office 2003 here and support is al
ittle light.
