Default Hiding columns, custom views, protected sheet

I have a shared workbook, accessed and maintained by up to 6 people.

Of (say) twenty columns, about half a dozen are calculations and need to be
protected from accidental deletion/change. It (deletion) has already
happened a number of times.
We also have about seven custom views created to allow easy data entry and
specific print formats for different purposes.
I thought the simple solution was to lock appropriate cells and protect
sheet before sharing the workbook but have now discovered that when that's
done, the custom views no longer work properly ("some view settings can't be
applied"), specifically because the columns now won't allow themselves to be
hidden.
Is there a way around this that will allow me to have specific custom views
that involve some views seeing locked columns and others not seeing those
columns but with no-one able to maintain them (the locked columns).
tia, Ian.
