When there's a response to a question, how can you direct a followup question
to the specific responder? There have been occasions when I've posted a reply
to the reply but there has been no further response after a couple of days.
Thanks.

If the responder wants to reply to a follow up question, he/she will. Some
give their private email other do not.
The responders are volunteers so you cannot demand too much.
best wishes

Bernard -
Thanks, I did not mean to imply that I was demanding an answer. By your
answer I guess the responders are notified somehow that another reply has
been posted. That was the question I should have asked.
Thanks.

Most, if not all, "regulars" will follow a thread to its conclusion. If the
follow-up was posted "days" after the the respondent thought the thread was
concluded then chances are good they won't look at that thread again.

After a couple of days without a response you should start a new thread.

I myself usually backcheck for about 4 - 5 days. After that, I move on!
