Default "Header row"

Absolute novice at Excel... Is there a way to use English words such as
STREET ADDRESS, CITY and STATE as the headers to my columns, rather than
the default 'A', 'B', 'C', etc? Right now I have row #1 as these header
titles, but this row is really not data but rather my desired names for
the columns. Thanks for any help.

That's the only way to do it.

Rick, you cannot change them to what you want, but you can freeze row 1 so
it will always be visible, select a cell in row 2 and window freeze panes.

I can't figure out where to go to post my question. There doesn't seem
to be a "Post Your Question" button - and yet, everyone seems to be
able to do it.

I'm going to have to change my screen name after this, I just know
it...

Thanks in advance for the help!

Nope...........you're stuck with either A,B,C or 1,2,3 at the column
Labels........you're doing it the way we all do it.......put our labels in
row 1........but you can limit the print area later if you wish so row 1 does
not print with the rest of the data.......or, conversely, you can repeat Row
1 at the top of every page in a printout........

Hi Rick,
Agree with Trevor, however lacking a reason as to why you want to do that,
here is some additional information...

If you are trying to get the column titles at the top of the screen
when displayed use window, freeze panes after selecting cell
B1 if you want top only, or B2 if you want to freeze top row and left column.
http://www.mvps.org/dmcritchie/excel/freeze.htm#freeze

or when printed with file, page setup, sheet
rows to repeat at top: $1:$1
http://www.mvps.org/dmcritchie/excel...e.htm#printing

If you are trying to get the row numbers to start at 1 on row 2 you can
use the fill handle to copy this formula down from cell A2:
=ROW()-1
http://www.mvps.org/dmcritchie/excel/fillhand.htm
which will get a report as that might look better, but it might be
somewhat frustrating for the person who updates the worksheet,
since the numbers are not the row number of the data.

Following on from Paul's suggestion, you can also choose not to display
the letters and numbers - click Tools | Options | View (tab) and
uncheck Row & Column headers then OK. You can use a grey background and
Bold for Row 1, so that it will *look* like your column headings have
changed. You will still need to refer to cells as A2, A3 etc in any
formulae.

Hope this helps.

Pete

Hi Kip,
Possibly because they want you to sign up with ExcelForum to "join the forum",
in reality for the privilege of posting to the Microsoft Excel newsgroups, which
are in fact public. I would suggest that you post directly to
newsgroups with a newsreader if this is from home, Outlook Express works fine
:Outlook Express 6.0, Newsgroups
http://www.mvps.org/dmcritchie/ie/oe6nws01.htm

If you are behind a firewall then I would suggest using Google Groups
which will probably still purvey advertising but your posting will not mess
up web page searches for others that such sites as excelforum are designed to
attract for the purpose of purveying advertisements and detract from the more
clearly written permanent web pages. You would have to register for Goggle Groups
but sooner or later you'd probably have to anyway so you find the recent article you
saw but lost track of and want to reply to.
