Default How do I stop a number from automarically turning into a date?

I am typing a single digit number in a cell, and when I enter it, it
automatically becomes a date. All I want to enter is a single digit.

With the cursor in that cell, click Format, Cells (in the menu) and look at
the number formatting. That cell is behaving as if it thinks you want a date
there. Choose a different number format.
