Default Microsoft.xls could not be found.

When opening Excel 2003 two popup warnings appear:
Microsoft.xls could not be found. Check the spelling etc. and
Excel.xls could not be found.
I can cancel these warnings and continue no problem.
Can anyone help in stopping these popups?

Thanks

SMK

I think I'd try this first...

Tools|Options|General|Ignore other applications (uncheck it)

--- or ---

Close Excel and
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /unregserver
then
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /regserver

The /unregserver & /regserver stuff resets the windows registry to excel's
factory defaults.

Dave,
Thanks for the effort. Tried your recommendation but unfortunately I
still have the problem. I hate to think I'll have to live with it.

The text you shared in your original post was kind of wierd. You may want to
type in exactly what you see in that error box. And describe how you're
starting excel to get that error.

In the meantime...

Chip Pearson has some notes on how to diagnose startup errors at:
http://www.cpearson.com/excel/StartupErrors.htm

And Jan Karel Pieterse has more notes at:

Good Morn Dave,
Went to both Excel help sites and still have the problem.

When I click on the Excel Desktop icon, Excel opens and the following
popup errors appear immediately :
'Files\Microsoft.xls' could not be found. Check the spelling of the
file name, and verify that the file location is correct.
If you are trying to open the file from your list of most recently used
files on the file menu, make sure that the file has not been renamed,
moved, or deleted.

The second popup wording is the very same except "Microsoft.xls" is
replaced with "Excel.xls".

Hope this helps

Maybe it's the shortcut icon on the toolbar that's screwing you up.

Just a test.

If you try:
windows start button|run|
excel
and hit enter
does it work ok.

If you right click on that shortcut icon and select properties, do you see a
ShortCut tab and if you do, what do you see in the Target box? (Copy and paste
directly.)

I'm guessing that it's a home made shortcut to excel that's causing the trouble.

I'd rightclick on the desktop and choose new|shortcut, browse for Excel.exe.

For me (xl2003), it's:
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\EXCEL.EXE"

Finish up that new shortcut and see if it works ok.

If it's ok, then dump the original troublesome shortcut.

===
If the shortcut is supposed to open an existing .xls file, then browse for that
file and use that as the target.
