Never, never, never save (or open) from Word or Excel directly to (or from)
any kind of removable media. It is much too easy to corrupt files.

ALWAYS work to/from a hard disk. Copy files between hard disk and removable
media using standard Windows move/copy file operations.

Stephen is correct, one thing i wanted to add is that you will notice it
will be very slow working directly off of a flash drive or any other
media device (even disks). Copy & Paste it onto your harddrive
(Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V) when you would like to work on it, and do the reverse
when you want to take it with you.
