Default why do all files get closed when i only close one in excel?

when i have multiple excel files open (more than 2), if i close one of them,
they all close. this just started happening and has not always been the case.
help!!

You're hitting the X on the application window title bar.

Don't do that.

(Yes, excel works differently than MSWord.)
