Default Tab color in Excel 2003

I set up all my worksheet tabs with color. But for some reason when I go to
format and then sheet, my 'tab color' is greyed out.

I see this graying out only when the workbook is protected (Tools,
Protection) or the workbook is shared (Tools, Share Workbook).

Thank you Jim but the worksheet is not protected. It is a shared worksheet
though if this helps in finding a solution.
