Default label to return a value

Is there any way to have a label appear in a cell and return a value to
calculate in a formula? I need to select an item in a list and have
that name return a value/

Thanks...
John

Hi John,
Was the suggestion I posted yesterday of any use at all?
If not then I would need more detail about the problem you're trying to
solve.
