Default copy/convert column email addresses Hyperlink "mailto:" excel97

I am trying to convert a column of e-mail addresses to hyperlink "mailto:".
I am still using Excel 97 and, so far, cannot find a way to get it done
without having to type each address again, cell by cell, in the "Insert
Hyperlink" drop-down. The same addresses are in Word 97 in a table and the
"mailto:" hyperlink works well there. I have tried copying from Word to
Excel but it looses the hyperlink on transfer.
Can anybody, please, come up with a simple answer to this? About 300
addresses are involved!
