hello there excel gurus.I am largely self taught in excel and can write
straightforward macros and have a pretty good grasp of some of the functions.I have always used form comboboxes for my pull down lists.I notice that you seem to prefer the data validation list, pros and cons.?I like that the fom combo box is always there. -- paul remove nospam for email addy! |

Paul: There's bunches of companies who don't let their users run macros, for
one. For another, Data Validation is, IMHO, much easier to show someone how to do. Comboboxes ALWAYS show their dropdown arrow. Comboboxes are harder to size to a cell. Hmm...what else? :) ************ Anne Troy www.OfficeArticles.com "paul" wrote in message ... hello there excel gurus.I am largely self taught in excel and can write straightforward macros and have a pretty good grasp of some of the functions.I have always used form comboboxes for my pull down lists.I notice that you seem to prefer the data validation list, pros and cons.?I like that the fom combo box is always there. -- paul remove nospam for email addy! |

Hi
Think about worksheet with a ...thousand rows, which must have combos in several columns. Or that you have designed such sheet, and then decided to add (or remove) some columns. Or that you suddenly find out, that you have to change coded-in lists in all those combos. With validation list, you create a list in a cell, and copy it to needed range; you can freely move the cell with list to any location on sheet; and to change the list 's source, you simply select the whole range with data validation list, and edit it in one go. Additionally, the main property of data validation list is to validate entries. You can't enter the wrong entry into cell, when not set otherwise - and that without implemeting sheet protection or using any VBA. -- Arvi Laanemets ( My real mail address: arvil<attarkon.ee ) "paul" wrote in message ... hello there excel gurus.I am largely self taught in excel and can write straightforward macros and have a pretty good grasp of some of the functions.I have always used form comboboxes for my pull down lists.I notice that you seem to prefer the data validation list, pros and cons.?I like that the fom combo box is always there. -- paul remove nospam for email addy! |

Hi!
Six of one, half dozen of the other! In some applications you may not want the list to always be visible. CB's need a linked cell (depending on how you use it) The range source is a little more complicated to define in CB's if you want variable sources. Both serve their own purpose! There's an example here that combines the advantages of both, using
cells with data validation lists, and one combobox: http://www.contextures.com/xlDataVal11.html paul wrote: hello there excel gurus.I am largely self taught in excel and can write straightforward macros and have a pretty good grasp of some of the functions.I have always used form comboboxes for my pull down lists.I notice that you seem to prefer the data validation list, pros and cons.?I like that the fom combo box is always there. -- Debra Dalgleish Excel FAQ, Tips & Book List http://www.contextures.com/tiptech.html |
