How do I get excel 2003 to open new windows(instances) when launching xls
files - like in excel 2000?

Default

Separate windows--but the same instance:

Tools|Options|View|check windows in taskbar

Yes, but if I close one file with the button in the top right hand corner it
closes all windows. I can close one at the time on the task bar by expanding
and then closing one file but trying to close just one at the top right
closes all. Is there a way to fix this so the top right closes only one file?

Not through xl2003.

If you open multiple instances of excel, then you can close any instance you
want.

I use:
windows start button|Run
excel
(and hit enter)

to start another instance.

Thanks Dave! The start run shortcut is a good idea which I will use.
