Sort numbers
I had posted a question titled "sort numbers" late Friday. And I have still
not solved my problem. Would anyone be willing to take a look at the file and see what if they can work with it? I look forward to any possible ideas. Thank you, JTH -- Access is my work in progress |

JTH,
Where did you post it? Better to describe with words and a small example within your post, since lots of folks don't download attachments - safe computing, and all. I read your post and all of the replies and still don't know what you meant,
are you trying to convert the product code's to numbers because excel is treating them as text? -- Regards, Dave "JTH" wrote: I had posted a question titled "sort numbers" late Friday. JTH,
That wasn't in this NG it was in the 'excel.newusers NG. Chip & Dominicb were suggesting that the 'Numbers' may be text. Try copying a blank unused cell and the highlighting the 'numbers' that you want to change then selecting Paste Special Add. This should change the text number into a real number. -- HTH Sandy Replace@mailinator with @tiscali.co.uk "JTH" wrote in message ... I had posted a question titled "sort numbers" late Friday. Thank you Sandy your suggestion work perfectly. Question, why do both
converted and non-converted cells show up as general when I look at how they are formatted? Also thank you Chip & Dominicb, for helping. Hi JTH,
General is just default formatting, where Excel will determine what you want by looking at what you enter, or how a formula is used referencing other cells and their formats. If you change the underlying format between number formats the change is immediate. But if you change between number and text or text and number usage then it doesn't really change until reentry. Adding a null cell constitutes reentry that works for both numbers and for text. Adding a zero would be valid only for numbers. F2 then Enter constitutes Reentry but since it is one at a time, it's best use is for very limited scope of 1 cell, or for testing if that is the problem. Another way would be with a macro such a byproduct of the TRIMALL macro used to fix problems such as leading spaces or use of nonbreaking space characters. http://www.mvps.org/dmcritchie/excel/join.htm#trimal which could mess up your data if dates are involved, some care is required, but it helps with a lot of problems. Of course this is a different thread than you originally started in the only beneficiary is you, not a good idea. Best to stick to the original thread as others mentioned. --- HTH, David McRitchie, Microsoft MVP - Excel [site changed Nov. 2001] My Excel Pages: http://www.mvps.org/dmcritchie/excel/excel.htm Search Page: http://www.mvps.org/dmcritchie/excel/search.htm "JTH" wrote in message ...
