Default Entering a Text Symbol ?

Hello,

I wish to have the character "-" in the middle of a cell to signify 'do
not use this cell'

I thought all I would have to do is format it first as Text, and then I
could enter the -

But apparently not.

How should I do this, please ?

Thanks,
Bob

1) suggest you use a text string (like "dont use") instead of a "-" (which has
other implications :) ).
2) if you must use a -, try entering a single quote before it so that it looks
like ...

'-

' means this is text. :)

Good luck. :)

What happens when you try? What do you expect to happen?

In Excel 2007, I have no problem entering the hyphen into a cell, no matter if it is formatted as TEXT or as General, and also "center aligning" the hyphen.
