John,
The compare and merge feature, I believe, is used only on a "shared"
workbook. I don't make use of shared workbooks because some
functionality I use alot is not available in shared workbooks.
That being said many people convert their workbooks to shared by going
to ToolsShare Workbook. This allows two people to work on the same
workbook and then the compare and merge is used to determine which
changes will ultimately be kept and which will be discarded in the
final document. There is alot more settings and features I have not
even touch on but that is the basic stuff.
