Default Open File gives me *.xls:1 and *.xls:2. What is this?

When I open a particular file provided by a client it opens two copies :1 and
:2. and 1 is hidden.

If there's a short explanation for what causes this and what it means I'd
appreciate that.

Otherwise what should I search under in Help or elsewhere for more info.

Window|New window
creates these windows.

if book1.xls:1 is truely hidden, you can use windows|Unhide to, er, unhide it.

After it's showing, you can click on the window you don't want and hit ctrl-w to
close it.
