Default Saving Customized Toolbars in Excel 2003

I am hoping that someone can help me with a severe problem that l have been
having ever since i purchased the latest version of MS Office 2003. Every
time I re-boot my laptop, l must re-customize my Toolbars in Excel with
Office 2003. Always in the past with previous versions of Excel I have been
able to get the software to save my customized Toolbars, and Office 2003 does
save my settings in Word -- it is only in Excel that l have this recurring
nightmare.

l have sent repeated emails to MicroSoft for help, but they never respond.
l have sent this request to several chat boards for MS problems,...again with
no response.

please send me info on correcting this aggravating problem to:

The customizations are saved in Excel11.XLB file.

Mine is located in......

E:\Documents and Settings\Gord\Application Data\Microsoft\Excel

That file is not saving when you close Excel.

Do a file search. You may have more than one .XLB file.

If you find more than one, note where they are then make some changes to a
Toolbar and close Excel.

Which one changes?

Also, depending upon permissions, you may not be able to save to the folder
your *.XLB file is residing and Excel makes a new one because it can't/won't
access that file.

In response to a private message:

First thing I would do is.

Close excel
windows start button|Search for *.xlb
(search through hidden folders for hidden files--just in case)

If you find any, move them to a different location (or delete them).

Then start up excel.

Make a small change to a toolbar (or create a new one).

Close excel and restart just to test.

If it worked, make some real changes.

When you're done making changes, close excel and find that *.xlb you just
created (by modifying the toolbars) using Windows start button|search.

Back it up to a nice spot.

If anything goes wrong, just copy the backup into the real location.

(my guess (and it's just a guess), is you have multiple versions of *.xlb and
your customizations are being overwritten with one that doesn't belong there
anymore. Placing a *.xlb in your XLStart will cause this.)

Another problem is that you may not authority to save to that folder. Windows
XP (I've heard) can be configured that way. I don't use windows XP, so I'm not
much help there.

In the future, you may want to post to the MS excel communities (available
somewhere at www.microsoft.com (easy to find if you look).

Or post through google's groups.

Or even connect directly to the MSServers and post to the newsgroups directly.

And to find answers to questions (this is not that uncommon), you could search
google's groups.

groups.google.com
(I'd click on the advanced button and tell google to search through the *excel*
newsgroups.)
