Default Excel adjust row height upon merging 2 cell with word wrap

When I merge two cells in excel 2003 and format to word wrap, the row height
is not adjusting to show wraped text. I am forced to manually adjust row
height

That's the way excel works.

Jim Rech wrote a macro called AutoFitMergedCellRowHeight that you may like:

If you're new to macros, you may want to read David McRitchie's intro at:

Merging cells is something that most in here will avoid like the plague.

Sorry, meant to add - Format / cells / Centre across selection usually gives
the same visual effect without any of the usual associated hassles.
