Default Updating External Data

Please Help!!!
I have a function (which produces a weighted average) in each of six
workbooks. In each workbook the function draws on data from the other
5 workbooks. In this way each workbook is connected to every other
workbook. Since each function draws on the same data, each average
should be the same but sometimes they are different. This has to do
with the way the data is updated and the order in which the books are
opened. Is there any way to get this data to update automatically or
as data in other workbooks is changed??? I've tried to go under the
edit menu and update through the links option but it refuses....thanks
all.
