Default why can't I open my Excel data in Excel, but I can as a merge sour

I need to add new fields to a data source that I am using for mail merge, but
when I try to open it in Excel, I get an error message saying it is not a
recognised file type. Help!

What is the name of the file? How are you trying to open it?

It has an .xls extension, and is one of two Access docs I saved as .xls
address books. The other one works fine.

If it is an Excel file than Excel will be able to open it. I know you said
you saved it as an Excel file in Access but it doesn't seem that is what you
wound up with. I don't know why but is it possible it is still an Access
file (with a new extension)?
