Default Read-only problem

I'm sure this has come up before but I can't find
an answer to it. Perhaps a kind soul could help.
Somehow, one of my xls files has become read-only.
I get "the file may be read-only, or you may be trying
to access a read-only location. Or, the server the
document was stored on may not be responding".
This happened after I copied the file offmy laptop
onto home computer. But I get the same message
on both computers.
The read-only attribute is not ticked.
Any ideas please.
