Default vlookup - available resource problem

I have a lookup table in a separate excel file that has two columns and
32,869 rows.

I get the following message when I try to create a lookup using Vlookup to
this file:

"Excel cannot complete this task with available resources. Choose less data
or close other applications".

I have no other applications running of any significance I get the same
message on another machine.

Does anyone know if there is a limitation of the size of lookup table you
can have. I really want to have five similar lookups.

Thanks
