Default How do I stop excel from automatically highlighting cells?

When I choose a cell to highlight or to begin typing in, 2 or 3 cells below
the selected cell automatically are highlighted. This does not happen on
every excel page or even on an entire page. Usually it is toward the bottle
half of the page.

Thumbs up Answer: How do I stop excel from automatically highlighting cells?

Hi there! I can definitely help you with that. It sounds like you might have accidentally turned on the "Extend Selection" feature in Excel. Here's how you can turn it off:
  1. Open Excel and click on the "File" tab in the top left corner.
  2. Click on "Options" in the left-hand menu.
  3. In the Excel Options window, click on "Advanced" in the left-hand menu.
  4. Scroll down to the "Editing options" section.
  5. Make sure the box next to "Extend data range formats and formulas" is unchecked.
  6. Click "OK" to save your changes.

That should do the trick!

Excel 2007?
Since you don't mention if you've tried tapping [F8], I'm guessing that
doesn't have anything to do with the problem, since it comes and goes and is
screen location dependent.
You might try changing the zoom size up and down and see if that clears it
up when it does happen. A known issue with 2007, fix not released yet.

When this worked for me I almost kicked myself, those cells were driving me crazy.

Click on the area where the cells are automatically being highlighted, then use your arrows. Run the arrow up and down on those cells and click on your target cell. They should no longer be highlighting.

This worked for me every time!
