Default why does my excel workbook keep doubling in size?

I have an excel file that almost doubles in size every time I save it. It
has lots of formulas, color, and is protected with a password. Recently I
had to make some changes to comply with changes in lease program. When I
tried to save it onto a floppy disk, it told me the disk was full and the
file was not saved. When I looked at the file size, it had gone from 706kb
to over 2mb. What is causing this?
