Default A diolog box that says 'Too many different cell formats.'

When I try to change the formating on certain cells, one at a time or many,
in a multi work book spread sheet I get a warning diolog box that says "Too
many different cell formats." How do I fix this. The formating change can
be a simple a adding color to a cell.
