Default Saving workspaces

When I try to save a workspace in Excel 2007, I get the error messsge:

"The extension can not be used with the selected file type. Change the file
extension in the File name text box or select or select a different file type
by changing the Save as type."

The default file type for a workbook is xlw and there are no other file
types to choose from as suggested in the message.

Does anyone have any solutions. I've been trying to resolve this for about a
week and would really appreciate help from anyone.
