Default Data Validation

I have a workbook with 12 worksheets. Each work sheet has data validation
"list" with three choices in the dropdown. All worksheets use the same
referenced list that is located on a hidden worksheet. Row 7 of the first
worksheet worked well at one time and now it does not offer the dropdown when
the cells are selected, all the other worksheet work fine. There is other
data validation cells that work fine but they have a different list, time
selection, in the drop down. I went to "data validation" "remove all" (from
the row 7 on worksheet one that are not offering the dropdown), saved,
closed, opened again and re-did data validation, it still will not work!
Does anyone know what happened?

My guess is that you are outside of the data validation range for that
column. Check the range. Good luck.

If you're using Excel 97 or earlier, data validation dropdowns don't
work in a frozen part of the window. Could that be the problem?

I am using xl2k... This did work at one time. Could it be caused by a macro?
I did add a data entry sheet and there is some code that changes the tab
name on each sheet as the data is entered. Other than that I have made no
significant changes to the wookbook, and none to the worksheet. If you know
why this is happening that would be cool, but my goal is to make it work
again! Thank you for you contribution on this forum, it is appreciated!!!

If you copy that row to another sheet, does it work?

If not, can you delete row, and put the data validation on another row?

Debra Thanks for the post back.

I went to the workbook to try that which you suggested.....and the thing now
works again!!!! Now should I be worried or thankful? Thank you for your
input and I will hope that "IT" has healed itself. If not I may just pitch
it off into the galactic bit bucket and start over!!!!

You're welcome, and I hope it's fixed! If the problem recurs, and the
workbook is important, I'd probably recreate it. In the meantime, make
sure you have a backup copy.

Debra ( How do you do a head in hand - sheepish grin - I looked at the wrong
workbook when I said it was working look?)

I don't know if you will check this thread again, if not I will post in a
day or so.
Here is what I found:
There is not a data entry sheet in this workbook.
I can copy and paste row 7 to a different worksheet and it works.
I copy and paste to a different location on same sheet and it does not work.
I removed the different code one at a time from this workbook and it does
not help.
I made a separate "list" and that did not help.
I goto editgotospecialdata validation it shows those cells are set for
data validation.
I made sure the "In-Cell dropdown" was checked in data validation.
Just found that no data validation works on this worksheet. (sorry about the
earlier miss information)
I therefore re created the worksheet (Copy and Paste, and re-established all
the links and references) and that fixed the problem.
Thank you for that nudge to recreate, I did not want to go to that extent,
but....

Thanks again Debra

Hi Mike (good work on the sheepish look -- I'm just glad that kind of
thing never happens to me! <g)

Sorry you had to recreate the sheet, but it's better than having it
totally fail at an inopportune moment. I'd guess that the sheet was
corrupted, and hope the rest of the workbook is okay.

Otherwise, is there a chance that you (or someone else) ever ran a macro
to delete shapes on that sheet? That might have deleted the data
validation dropdown shape too.

Hi Debra, Thanks for the post back,
The only thing that has ever been on that sheet is an ms calander object,
would that count? I had some "issues" with it re-sizing itself when I first
put it in. I probibly did delete it a few times, but it is okay now and
functioning well. What I have is is a time sheet workbook for as many
employees as one would like to track. It automatically populates all
necessary cells with the dates (from the calander control). As the time is
clocked in it gives totals for hours worked and overtime hours worked. It
yeilds gross hours, total overtime hours and gross pay. The hours total are
used to drop into an accounting program to do payroll. The gross pay is used
to help track expenses from shift to shift. I also did one for a person that
has three stores and it helped track expenses from store to store. This is
where the data validation is, to select the shift (or store), then with a
countif formula I get the totals for each. I have these for aTwo Week pay
period, Bi-Monthly and Monthly, some with a data entry sheet and some
without.

Debra again....THANKS for all the help

Hi Mike,

You're welcome! It sounds like an interesting workbook. Maybe adding and
deleting the calendar control a few times caused some corruption. Since
it's working now, with the new version of the worksheet, I'd make a few
backup copies!

used to drop into an accounting program to do payroll.

Hi Mike (good work on the sheepish look -- I'm just glad that kind of
thing never happens to me! <g)

Sorry you had to recreate the sheet, but it's better than having it
totally fail at an inopportune moment. I'd guess that the sheet was
corrupted, and hope the rest of the workbook is okay.

Otherwise, is there a chance that you (or someone else) ever ran a macro
to delete shapes on that sheet? That might have deleted the data
validation dropdown shape too.

You're welcome, and I hope it's fixed! If the problem recurs, and the
workbook is important, I'd probably recreate it. In the meantime, make
sure you have a backup copy.

If you copy that row to another sheet, does it work?

If not, can you delete row, and put the data validation on another row?

I am using xl2k... This did work at one time. Could it be caused by a macro?
I did add a data entry sheet and there is some code that changes the tab
name on each sheet as the data is entered. Other than that I have made no
significant changes to the wookbook, and none to the worksheet. If you know
why this is happening that would be cool, but my goal is to make it work
again! Thank you for you contribution on this forum, it is appreciated!!!

If you're using Excel 97 or earlier, data validation dropdowns don't
work in a frozen part of the window. Could that be the problem?
