Default Entering date as MM/DD/YY no longer works, why?

You need to check out the short date format used by the OS - this is
what Excel uses. From Start | Control Panel click on Date, Time &
Regional Options.

Hope this helps.

Hi all,

Up until about a week ago I've been able to enter dates as mm/dd/yy and the
cell would display it in what ever format it was set for. Example I enter the
date 8/27/09 and based my settings it would display 2009-08-27. This stopped
working for some reason. Now I have to enter the date with the year fist such
as yy/mm/dd or yy-mm-dd. If I enter the month first and the dat second with
the year last it displays what I type and pays no attention to the cell
formatting.

I found this problem to exist on both my excel 2003 and 2007. If I open the
work book on a different computer the problem does not exist. I repaired the
install and ran diag, but it did not fix it. I even uninstalled Office 03 and
07 and reinstalled, problem still exist.

The machine I am having this problem on is XP Pro SP3. I don't have this
problem with Excel 2007 running XP Pro SP2 or Win7 Ent. As this exist in both
'03 and '07 I am thinking it has something to do with the OS.

Any ideas?
