Default files dispayed at opening are acient

When I open Excel for Mac 2004 (v.11.5.5) it displays 6 workbooks that I
closed some time ago and not any recently active ones. The drop-down list of
recently used files is blank. If I close the open files and restart Excel,
the problem repeats.
