Why should a spread sheet expand (explode) to 7MB or 14MB when it should be
no greater than 350KB?

Your used range got messed up. If you look at some of your sheets the scroll
bars will allow you to scroll well past the end of the data. All of the cells
you can scroll to are being stored as if they had stuff in them. To fix that
check out this site...
