Default cell address changes

Take a big breath, blow into paper bag. The panic is over!

In classical Excel (pre Excel 2007) use Tools | Options and open the
General tab, locate the item "R1C1 Reference Style" and uncheck the box.

In Excel 2007: click the Office tool (the colourful ball); at bottom of the
next dialog click Excel Options; in the left-hand side click the Formulas
tab; in "Working with Formulas: uncheck the "R1C1 Reference Style" box

Now all will be well until you next open a workbook with this feature turned
on - or someone in the office plays a prank!

best wishes
