Default MS Query will not start from Excel 2000

I have a problem when I select DataGet External DataNew Database Query,
Excel hangs with this message at the bottom of the Excel window
'Waiting for data to be returned from Microsoft Query'

I can start MS Query directly from MSQRY32.EXE and retrieve all the data I
need, but not into Excel.

Office is all upto date to SP3. PC is running XPv2002 SP3.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks

The steps you outline would normally return a dialog box wanting you to
select a Data Source, etc.......assuming you go through all that properly and
still get the same Error message/hang, it's probably because the source
cannot be found, nor that you do not have approved access to it from that
login.

Thanks for the reply.
I agree, normally Query would start and you could select the required data.
As explained I can run Query from MSQRY32.EXE has find the data, but I need
it going straight into Excel so that I can refresh data in the future.
Any help would be appreciated.

I would suggest that you try starting MSquery from Excel again, only this
time try to access a simple ACCESS file that you just create and therefore
KNOW that you have access rights to.......if that works, then your original
problem is probably what I said before, that the file cannot be found or you
do not have rights to it.......if it does not work, then it could mean that
either your Excel or your MSQuery install is corrupt.

Default MS Query will not start from Excel 2000

I'm having the same problem as Ian. Was working fine with Excel a couple of
months ago. I ran Detect and Repair and inserted my original CD when
prompted. No errors and it completed fine. I can create a query running
msqry32.exe, save it to the hard drive and insert it into a spreadsheet but
cannot edit it after either. It runs fine on my Win2K machine but not on my
WinXPSP2 machine even though it was earlier this year. It is not a rights to
the database issue as I can run a query but cannot get to the ODBC drivers in
Excel. The dialog doesn't show up.

Anyone with ideas, greatly appreciated. TIA rasinc

Default MS Query will not start from Excel 2000

I have two different databases at work, MP2 and ManMan and each required the
MIS dept to put in special permission for me to access them via my
queries.....I don't know how or why, but it would not work until/unless they
gave their permissions. Whenever I do a query, I record a macro in Excel
while I do it,.... and when it is done, I now have a macro that I can
edit.....sometimes the editing can be tedious, but it can be done.........

Well, after a good night sleep it seems to be working again. I guess the
Detect and Repair needed a reboot that I didn't do yesterday.

Thanks

Glad you got it sorted. Those things are a real pain when they act up, but
once they get setteled in, they seem pretty stable.....

Default MS Query will not start from Excel 2000

I have tried your first suggestion but cannot start MSQuery from within
Excel. Have checked the Addins which confirms that it is installed.
Following your suggestion that Office may be corrupt, I uninstalled MS
Office , renamed all folders in Program FilesMicrosoft office. Renamed the
Office folder in Documents and SettingsAll UsersApplication
DataMicrosoft.
I then ran MS Office 2003 resouce kitremoval tool, which is suppost to
remove all previous version of Office.
Then reinstalled Office, but when I ran Excel it did not go to 'first use'
so must be retaining some previous settings and maybe the problem ones! Then
tried Excel DataNew Database QueryGet external dataNew Database Query,
but MSQuery will not start , window just hangs forever.
Any ideas please, getting desperate now!
