Default Excel - cursor not visible in drawing objects

Using Excel 2003 on a networked system, adding/editing text in a drawing
object and charts is made difficult because once I've clicked on the object
with the "I-beam" I can't see the editing cursor.
I don't have this problem with drawing objects in other applications such as
Word, PowerPoint, or Access.
My colleagues don't have this problem in Excel either.
I've looked under "Tools" then "Options", but I can't see any obvious items
that need to be ticked or unticked.
I'd be grateful for any help on this.
