Corrupted Excel Program File?
Hi all,
I am suspecting a corrupted Excel program file on an installation at our office, so I want to uninstall and install Excel (which is OK, I can do that). My question is: Is there an equivalent file in Excel to the Word normal.dot file? (I know that in Word, if it corrupts, and you uninstall Excel, it doesn't remove this file, so the corruption remains....). Excel 2003, SP3. TIA -- Wendy |

Corrupted Excel Program File?
Hi Wendy,
Did you try repairing Office before uninstalling Excel (Help|Detect & Repair)? Uninstalling & reinstalling is overkill if repairing works and, if it doesn't, uninstalling & reinstalling is unlikely to improve things. Excel doesn't have anything equivalent to 'Normal.dot' by default, but user can create their own 'Personal.xls' file for storing gloabally-accessible macros. Similarly, you cn define a default workbook layout via the creation of a file named 'Book.xlt' and a default worksheet layout via the creation of a file named 'Sheet.xlt'. As with Word's 'Normal.dot', the location of these files can be changed by the user. -- Cheers macropod [Microsoft MVP - Word] "Wendy" wrote in message ... Corrupted Excel Program File?
Check for Personal.xls . It is not supplied with Excel. If at all you have
any macros in personal.xls; the next time you open Excel, the Personal.xls file will be loaded and any macros it contains will be loaded too. You can check for Personal.xls either by choosing Window..Unhide and checking the list of files or by pressing Alt-F11 to open Excel VBE. In the Project Pane on the left tree view you should see Personal.xls listed. As far as where Personal.xls is stored on your disk, under XP you should find it in C:\Documents and Settings\<UserName\Application Data\Microsoft\Excel\XLSTART OR else check C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\XLStart If this post helps click Yes --------------- Jacob Skaria "Wendy" wrote: Hi all, I am suspecting a corrupted Excel program file on an installation at our office, so I want to uninstall and install Excel (which is OK, I can do that). Corrupted Excel Program File?
Hi Wendy
Before you start un-installing etc., it may be a corrupt .xlb file which has become bloated to a very large size. This holds the customisation of your toolbar. Look in your XLStart folder and see if you have a "bloated" xlb file of a large size. The location of your XLstart folder will vary with the operating system you are running. It could be C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\XLStart C:\Documents and Settings\Roger\Application Data\Microsoft\Excel\XLSTART or in Visa RogerAppdataRoamingMicrosoftExcel Substitute your name for Roger If so, rename it to .OLD instead of .XLB and try re-starting Excel. It will re-build a basic Toolbar for you. You would then need to carry out your Customisations again. Once done. go out to Windows Explorer and make a copy of this file, just in case you get a re-occurrence. -- Regards Roger Govier "Wendy" wrote in message ... Corrupted Excel Program File?
Thanks to all.
I looked, but couldn't find any of the extra files you all mentioned, so I have run the repair procedure, and hope that this will fix the problem up (the original problem was intermittent, but consistent). -- Wendy "Roger Govier" wrote: Hi Wendy Before you start un-installing etc., it may be a corrupt .xlb file which has become bloated to a very large size.
