Default Excel 2003 Data Validation

I've used the Excel 2003 Data Validation Warning and Stop funcitions in the
past successfully. I have a new spreadsheet that is not providing a pop-up
when the value is not from the list.
The lists are on a separate worksheet within the same workbook.
I am referencing the list by 'naming' the list and using '=namedlist' as the
list source.
The list does appear as a drop-down with the correct values.
However, I can input any other value in the column.
I have tried clearing and re-adding the error alerts.
They still do not work.
Can someone direct me on what might be the cause?

Are you sure you haven't unchecked "show error alert after invalid data is
enterd"?
