Default excel to Word

Someone created multiple worksheets (97) that when printed just look like
word documents. Now they want me to convert them to a word merge documents.
I loose most of the formating when I put them in excel. I am using office
2003.

you have spreadsheets
they look like word documents
you want to convert them to word
but you loose the formatting in excel

could you maybe explain a little more?
