Default Access will not accept a date of less than 1900 from Excel. Why

I am trying to convert an Excel spreadsheet to an Access database. I have
some dates that are in the 1800's and Access will not take them. It puts in
#Num! in the space where the date is supposed to go. Can anyone tell me how
to fix this problem. I have tried every kind of number format there is and
when I open Access, it still does not take it. By the way, the Access
database and the spreadsheet are linked so when I change the spreadsheet, it
should change the database. Thanks for any help you can give me. I have
wasted days on this.
