Default VLOOKUP in 2003

I need to use VLOOKUP with an added MAX function. I want to look in a colume
of data specified by the Vlookup and deliver the maximum value in the vlookup
parameters? Any idead?

Please expand upon "column of data specified by the Vlookup"
The meaning is unclear.
Maybe give a simple example
