Default Add-ins query wizard operands (criteria tab)

This is just a simple new user question. While pulling a microsoft add-ins
query in query wizard, on the criteria tab you have to select < or = , etc.
Can someone please tell me what the ~ symbol stands for or could be used for?
Thanks in advance.
