Default Excel 2007 is slow when more than 3 files are open

Recently after upgrading to Office 2007, I noticed Excel slows down/crashes
if 3 or more excel files are open. I don't remember the error message
exactly.

System configuration is Windows XP SP2, 2 GB RAM, and lost of free disk space.

I assume you meant "lots" of free disk space <g

How big are the files? That's the only reason I can think of for the
problem.

Sorry about the typo, yes i meant lots.

This is the exact error message: "There is not enough disk space. Free
enough disk space, and then try again."

These files are huge, but I never got the error with Excel 2003. Although
the files are in 2003-97 format. Maybe thats the issue, i should try
coverting the files to 2007.

There used to be a poster who repeatedly recommended switching to Access
when Excel files got too big. In fact, he often suggested Access as a
substitute even if the Excel files weren't big. I haven't seen him
posting lately, but there was some merit in his concerns with respect to
large files. Excel is not really a database program, although it's fine
for limited-size data. Going to 1,000,000 rows in Excel 2007 was an MS
misguided effort, IMHO.

Also, is it really necessary to have all three of these huge files open
at the same time?
