Default Excel xlsx 'autotype'

With regrets, I have upgraded to Excel 2007, the xlsx product.
In trying to simply type the label PALT(C), I found that Excel turns the (C)
into a copyright symbol. How can I turn off all of this sort of automatic
typing?
